Adjustable Bases 101

by BlvdHome

While adjustable bases help you to easily watch TV, they offer much more than that! Adjustable bases can help with back pain, reduce acid reflux, alleviate snoring, and improve overall sleep! Here’s what you need to know before buying an adjustable base.

Can I Use an Adjustable Base with My Mattress?

All mattresses are made differently. Some are made with coils; others are completely foam. Some mattresses will not work correctly with an adjustable base. So be sure to know what kind of mattress you have before spending money on a base!

Mattresses that can use an adjustable base include all foam, premium mattresses, pocketed/wrapped coil and wire-tied coil mattresses. If your mattress is foam encased or has a steel coil, it will also work correctly with an adjustable base.

Mattresses that will not work correctly with an adjustable base are any mattress with a border wire, verti-coil, helical wire, and almost every mattress priced under $300.00

Types of Bases

Just like mattresses, there are different types and styles of adjustable bases. There is a range of available features, but only some foundations possess them all. If you are happy with only head adjustment capabilities, then a lower-priced foundation will be perfect for you. A middle-range foundation generally offers more control over the head adjustments and offers foot adjustments, as well. More expensive foundations offer complete control over the head and feet adjustments, have a wireless remote that controls settings, and many even have massaging capabilities! These foundations are generally higher priced but are also the most popular. Nothing beats the comfort they offer!

If you and your partner can’t find a mattress that is comfortable for both of you, there are split bases! Each person can control their side and make it fit their individual needs!

Pros

The biggest and most obvious benefit is the comfort an adjustable foundation can offer. Just imagine falling asleep to a customizable massage! There are many health benefits to having an adjustable base. Some of the health benefits include digestion improvement, enhancing circulation, lighten leg and foot swelling, and lessen acid reflux and heartburn. They can also help with sleep apnea, asthma, and snoring. There are many options when it comes to styles, features, and prices.

Cons

Adjustable bases can be more expensive than a basic foundation. Your mattress may not work correctly with a base, so you’d have to buy a new mattress to use an adjustable base. These bases are much heavier than a standard base which can causes issues if you like to rearrange your furniture frequently. Most adjustable beds have a “retainer bar” which is the metal bar at the base of the bed, keeping the mattress from moving. This bar is necessary in order to use the adjustable base correctly, but it can get in the way when you are making your bed.
