There is something about a master bedroom that speaks to a woman… we all want that perfectly balanced space that exudes our personal style while offering us a retreat from the daily madness of everyday life of work, kids, and housework.
So, how can we accomplish turning our personal space of four walls into a space that speaks to us; that beckons us to snuggle up with a good book, lighted candles, and our favorite treat on a cold winter night? To me, the words “Master Bedroom Retreat” means “my space”, “my relaxation”, “my little slice of sanity”, and achieving it is much easier than you might think!
Firstly, decide on the “look” you’re going for. In our design class, we created two completely different designs of “Urban Loft” and “Modern Cottage”.
Our urban loft design was more masculine with a little hint of feminine charm. We kept it simple yet functional with a beautiful contemporary leather tufted chair, green plants, metal industrial style lighting, centered balanced rug with a cowhide rug offset to bring a little lofty feel to the writing desk area. We were able to bring balance and style to the brick wall by adding a simple shutter style room divider and asymmetrical wall art, which added the height we needed. Using two different bedside tables gave it an eclectic edge and simple accessories and plain bedding finished off the design perfectly.
Our Modern Cottage design was a much softer look. We turned the design into a more feminine space. Yet, by keeping several of the furniture pieces and industrial lighting, we were able to keep a hint of masculine touches that would appeal to many couples.
Switching out the office chair and reading chair and using a beautiful distressed white accent bedside cabinet added to the design. We added balance to the room by using a floor lamp with matching table lamp and large cathedral mirror. We chose wicker accent pieces and a full-skirted wicker chair, which we softened by adding a large fluffy throw pillow. The bedding choice was a lot softer and really worked well for the cottage style we chose to create.
Here are a few simple ideas to use when creating the master bedroom retreat of your dreams:
Don’t be afraid to use decorative as well as functional accessories.
When decorating with neutrals, use texture, depth, and pattern to add richness and interest to a design. Layers of luxurious fabrics and finishes enhance natural walls and evoke a polished vibe. A few elements, like layering rugs and industrial lighting, can really add an eclectic vibe to a space.
A fresh coat of white paint will freshen up tired looking walls. Adding brick or wallpaper accent walls adds interest and depth.
Don’t forget the windows! Floor length curtains in light cotton, linens, or sheer fabrics add an airy feel. Pairing them with a woven blind or roman shade will add privacy while keeping the room looking and feeling light.
Area rugs can be layered, centered, or off-centered in the room to add a softness and warmth to any space. Using a shag rug will add texture and depth as well as warmth and color.
Whatever style you decide to create, make it your own. Add touches of your favorite things, colors and textures. Start with the bedding and bed, or a favorite arm-chair, desk or rug and design your master bedroom retreat around that.
Be creative, step outside your comfort zone, and you’ll be amazed with what you’ll be capable of creating.
Life may not always go as planned… But don’t worry… There’s a Boulevard Solution.
