Many companies grow out of their space and need more room. Many move out of their 19th and 20th-century factories and into newer, bigger, and more modern buildings. Usually, new companies move in, but sometimes they are converted into condos or apartments. This is how the industrial style began. Exposed brick, pipes, rafters, large open spaces, etc. became popular due to the industrial style. Thankfully, you don’t have to live in an abandoned factory to create an Industrial home. Here’s how you can create a modern industrial abode!
How to Decorate in the Industrial Style
Industrial interiors are all about exposure and natural architecture. Don’t be afraid to let your rafters, old brick, or ductwork show. People often rip up the laminate flooring or carpet to reveal stained concrete or natural wood floors. Exposed brick walls are commonly seen in Industrial homes. If you don’t have a brick wall to expose, you can always try convincing brick wallpaper.
Open floor plans or studio apartments can be easily converted into an industrial-style home. The openness and uncluttered feel are what make the Industrial style so appealing. Industrial is very similar to Minimalism in the sense that they are both beautiful, yet plain.
Color makes a big difference in any style. In the case of Industrial, it is the lack of color that makes a difference. Monochromatic palettes of greys, iron black, and white are the main colors used in Industrial design. Any color that is found in brick, natural wood, or concrete will fit into an Industrial home. Red and orange are popular colors for accessories.
Furniture
Wrought iron is a popular material in many Industrial homes. Wrought iron and leather bar stools can add an industrial look to any kitchen. Wrought iron headboards are becoming increasingly popular and are generally inexpensive. Try adding a wooden bench to the dining table or in an entryway. Black leather couches are sleek, suave, and perfect for any Industrial living room. Cinderblocks and wood pallets can be repurposed into tables, bed frames, and more. Corrugated metal can be used as a unique backsplash or as siding on a bar. Natural wood dining/coffee tables with iron legs are perfectly industrial.
Accessories
It is usually inexpensive to decorate an Industrial styled home because not much decor is needed. Most industrial homes are plain and simple. Simple throw pillows, plain rugs, and minimal wall art can add character to an Industrial room. The main focus of the room should be the natural architecture and simplicity. A good way to add some personality to any Industrial home is lighting fixtures. Naked bulbs, wrought iron chandeliers, and sunburst lights are all popular lighting fixtures in Industrial design.
