Leather furniture is great for families with kids and pets, as they are extremely durable. Whether it’s your recliner or sofa, here are the best cleaning tips to keep your leather looking radiant!
How to Clean
Leather is porous, meaning it will absorb moisture so it’s important to not let any liquid sit for too long or you can discolor your furniture. For a light clean, wipe down your furniture with a microfiber cloth. You can use the same cloth to buff areas that need a little more shine. Dust can damage leather, so be sure to wipe down your leather furniture once a week.
For a more intensive clean you’ll need:
- Warm water
- Saddle soap (leather soap)
- Soft rag
- Rubbing alcohol
- Cotton swab
- Leather cream
Use the rag, water, and saddle soap to wipe down the whole couch. For tougher stains like ink, apply some rubbing alcohol using a cotton ball to the stained area. Avoid getting the rubbing alcohol anywhere else. After you’ve cleaned all the spots and stains, use soft towels to dry the couch. To ensure your leather is soft, pliable, and moisturized, use the rag to evenly apply the leather cream. Use a small to moderate amount for a perfect shine. Be sure to vacuum under the cushions and in the tight crevices frequently!
Be sure to check the tag to see what your manufacturer recommends. There are different types of leather that require different care. If you are unsure about the cleaners you are using, test a small amount of cleaner on a small section of the leather.
Maintainance
Follow these simple steps to keep your leather furniture looking brand new!
Avoid oil-based cleaners. They can stain and darken leather. Avoid placing your leather in direct sunlight. Warm temperatures can cause the leather to crack and bright light can discolor the leather. Apply leather protector every few months to help avoid scratches and discoloration. Clean up spills as quickly as possible. Don’t let liquids sit. If you spill anything oily, you can use talcum powder or baking powder to absorb it. Then follow the cleaning tips above. Our skin produces oil, so be sure to wipe down your furniture weekly to avoid oil stains.
