Both Samsung and LG use exclusive smart TV platforms, each with a distinct personality.
Since 2014, LG has dominated the market with webOS, a simple, unadorned smart TV interface. For frequently used apps, streaming services, and inputs, it uses a horizontal menu bar with customizable placement so you can decide where your favorite apps are displayed on the dashboard.
Although the structure of Samsung's Tizen platform isn't very different from LG's ThinQ AI software (you could say the latter influenced it), it doesn't have as great a search mechanism.
What about voice assistants, though? The Google Assistant is already embedded into LG's OLED and Super UHD televisions, and there is some limited Alexa device compatibility as well. Samsung offers the option to use Google Assistant or Alexa through third-party devices in addition to its own (slightly poorer) first-party Bixby assistant, which is available exclusively on mid-range or premium televisions.

The two panel technologies used in today's high-end television industry are OLED and QLED.
The term "organic light-emitting diode," or OLED, refers to a TV panel that can produce its own light as opposed to needing light to shine through it. This makes it possible to regulate the brightness of individual pixels and create incredibly small TV panels. OLEDs are renowned for their rich color reproduction, intense black depths, and low brightness.
OLED screen "burn in" is a frequently discussed topic, but most of the evidence for this is anecdotal, and you would likely need to be working the set very hard for this to become an issue.
Even if your home has a Sony OLED, LG Display manufactures all OLED panels, so you can still thank LG for that.
Samsung, on the other hand, created QLED as a proprietary technology. Instead of controlling the brightness with each pixel, QLED makes do with a number of dimming zones to alter brightness across the panel while enhancing color and contrast with the employment of a filter of quantum dots. Additionally, QLED TVs are much brighter than OLEDs (thousands of nits compared to hundreds), but as a result, they may not be able to display both light and dark images simultaneously as well.
It will suffice to note that Samsung's sets fall short on contrast (relatively) but make up for it with a bright and impactful display, whereas OLED is typically suited to high-quality video formats in dark viewing environments.

Both TV brands support high dynamic range (HDR), but they support slightly different formats. LG incorporates Dolby Vision into its premium line of OLEDs and Super UHD TVs, while Samsung prefers HDR10+ for its high-end TVs.
Both formats use dynamic metadata to adjust the television's output to the content being viewed, so scenes of dimly lit drawing rooms or dark underground caverns have different levels of brightness, contrast, and picture processing.
Dolby Vision, which has a 12-bit color gamut instead of HDR1010-bit+ one, is actually the more advanced standard and is also more widely used (both the Google Chromecast with Google TV and Apple TV 4K take advantage of Dolby Vision).
Even though the preferred HDR format only really matters at the higher end of the pricing spectrum, people who are willing to spend a lot should carefully consider which services they're likely to want HDR content on.
It's also important to note that Panasonic is neutral regarding HDR formats, supporting both Dolby Vision and HDR10+ on even the budget-friendly GX800 LED TV.
