Say Sayonara to Your Stinky Washer

by BlvdHome

What is something that you always have to do? If you said laundry, then this is the blog for you. There is nothing better than putting on a clean outfit before you start your day. Unfortunately, your washer can get smelly and it can leave your clean clothes smelly too. Luckily there are ways to clean and prevent this from happening, so the only thing you’ll smell is clean and fresh laundry.

There are several reasons why your washer starts to smell, but thankfully there are ways to help prevent this.

  • Too much soap can be a bad thing

When it comes to washing your clothes it is important to measure out the soap per load size. Too much soap will create residue and build-up which will lead to your washing machine smelling.

  • Picking the right soap will help

It is also important to make sure you are using the best detergent for your washer that is recommended by the brand.

  • A dry drum will make all the difference

We all have been there when we have 2 or more loads to do over the weekend and it is just easier to do them back to back. However, not letting the drum dry will cause the washer to get smelly. We recommend letting the drum completely dry before starting a new load by leaving the washer open. Wiping down the rubber gaskets after each load is another step that is often forgotten. This will help prevent mildew and smells from growing in the washer after each wash. Thankfully most new washing machines are being built with vent dry options to help dry out the drum after each wash.

If you skipped a step or two and your washer is starting to smell, no need to worry, there are cleaning methods that will help. Brands like Tide and Affresh make washing machine cleaning tabs that are easy to use and are compatible with most washers. If you have sensitive skin or are looking for something a little more holistic, you can make your cleaner. All you need is baking soda, white vinegar, and water:

1. Use baking soda and water 50/50 mix and add about half a cup into the washer dispenser.

2. Inside your washer drum add two cups of white vinegar - Then Run a hot water cycle.

3. After the wash cycle is over, take a 50/50 mix of White Vinegar and Water and wipe out the drum and rubber gasket.

While doing laundry isn’t always fun, it is a cycle of life. The reward of clean clothes makes it all worth it. Keeping your washer clean and odor-free will help keep your clothes fresher longer.
