With so many mattress options, how do you know what kind of mattress is best for you? We’ll be going through the most popular types and materials of mattresses, the pros and cons of each, and finally, help you find the perfect mattress.
Innerspring
Innerspring mattresses are the most traditional and popular type of mattress. These are made with interlocking spring coils then have a foam pad on top. There are different types of coils that all react differently to movement and weight.
Bonnell: Bonnell coils, also referred to as “open coils” have been around for many years. They are hourglass-shaped and wired together. They are very durable, but not the most comfortable.
Offset Coils: These coils are also hourglass-shaped. They are better at forming to one’s body.
Continuous Coils: These coils will last for years! They are wired together in circles. While they might last a decade, many people find them unsupportive.
Pocketed Coils: Pocketed coils are individually covered in fabric. They move independently, which means they are great at conforming to the sleeper. They are also great at dispersing weight and movement, so your partner won’t feel you move as much as they would if you were sleeping on offset coils. Pro tip: pocketed coil mattresses are one of the only types of innerspring mattresses that will work with an adjustable base.
Memory Foam
Memory foam is a dense polyurethane foam. This foam is designed to conform to the body rather than compress. These are very popular because they provide pressure relief and are simply very comfortable. Due to their low-motion transfer, these mattresses are perfect for partners who like to toss and turn.
You can get a memory foam mattress at any comfort level, from firm to ultra-plush. Memory foam mattresses will work with an adjustable base. Unfortunately, these mattresses tend to be a little warmer than regular foam mattresses. Thankfully, you can opt for cooling memory foam!
Hybrid
Hybrids combine coils and memory foam. They offer lots of support while still maintaining comfort. Thanks to their incredible support, side, back, and stomach sleepers love this type of mattress. Due to the use of both memory foam and coils, these mattresses tend to be a little more expensive than non-hybrid mattresses.
Gel
Gel-infused mattresses are a fairly new invention. Brands like Purple® are known for their squishy gel mattresses. Gel mattresses offer unique comfort. They also have low-motion transfer, making sleepless nights a little less sleepless. What they offer that most mattresses can’t is great air circulation. This makes these mattresses much cooler. They generally last upwards of 15 years; longer than most foam alternatives.
Accessories
Now that you’ve chosen your mattress, it’s time to accessorize! Maybe you like your mattress ultra, ultra-plush… like ultra. In that case, you can always use mattress toppers. Not only do mattress toppers add extra comfort, but they can even help cool!
Down: Down mattress toppers are filled with a mixture of down and feathers. They are super comfy, but also super warm. If you are a hot sleeper, this mattress topper may not be for you.
Pillow top: If you are saving your money to buy a new mattress, but want extra comfort now, pillow tops are a great alternative. Pillow tops are what give mattresses that cloud-like feel.
Cooling Mattress Pad: These pads aren’t made to add plushness, but they can add to comfort. If you are a warm sleeper, these are perfect for you. These pads help keep your body cool from the moment you fall asleep to the minute you wake.
