Have you not been sleeping well lately? Feeling overwhelmed and stressed? It may be hard to believe but redecorating your bedroom can help! It’s hard to function properly when you are running on minimal sleep, but it’s hard to sleep well when you are stressed. Having a safe place where you can escape reality and relax is important to your mental and physical health. Here are 13 of our favorite ways to turn your bedroom from crazy to cozy.
1. Invest in Quality Bedding
It is important to love your bed and feel comfortable there. You don’t have to spend buckets of money either. First, determine your style and budget, then go shopping! Shop places like Nordstrom, Maurice’s, and Boulevard Home for inexpensive, name-brand bedding. If you sleep fire hot, search for cotton or linen sheets to help keep you cool. If you are an icy cold sleeper, buy flannel or fleece sheets for extra warmth. Find a fluffy comforter then pair it with a fun duvet cover! Duvet covers are a great way to save money while easily changing up your style.
2. Buy A Nice Mattress
The truth hurts, but you have to hear it: it’s very difficult to love your bed if your mattress is uncomfortable and old. You shouldn’t have to wake up with back pain every morning! Buying a mattress is easy and it doesn’t have to be expensive. Check out our mattress selection,

3. Create Soft Lighting
Bright, harsh lights are great for schools and museums, but not so great for your comfy oasis. Instead of turning on your overhead lighting, try using lamps, or nightlights for a cozy effect. Fairy lights are a great way to add a whimsical touch to any room. Himalayan salt lamps create a warm glow. You can even use your old lava lamp from the ’90s to add a personal, nostalgic touch (we didn’t say it would look good, we are just saying it could be cozy).
4. Use Calming Colors
Choose a calming color pallet to encourage peacefulness. Imagine trying to relax or fall asleep in a fire-engine red room. That stresses me out just thinking about it. Cool colors like blue, green, and purple are great, calm wall colors. Pastels are happy, peaceful, and lovely accent colors. Avoid bright, neon colors like hot pink, highlighter orange, or lime green. Also, try to stay away from lifeless, dark colors like black, brown, and gray.
5. Use Warm and Natural Materials
Stiff, manmade materials like plastic can heavily dampen a cozy vibe. Wood, wicker, macrame, and cotton are much comfier than iron, steel, metal, and plastic. Instead of metal accessories, invest in stone or wood accessories.
Avoid itchy, unyielding, or rough fabric like burlap, tulle, or synthetic fabrics. Instead use pliable and soft fabrics like cotton, linen, and cashmere. Can you imagine cuddling with a pillow made of denim? Yuck, no thank you. Cuddle with cotton!
6. Buy Blackout Curtains
Blackout curtains are awesome for so many reasons: they’ll help you sleep better at night, they block out morning light which allows you to sleep past 7 AM on weekends, and they can even help you save money! Blackout curtains can save you up to 25% on your energy bill by preventing cold/warm air from escaping out windows.
7. Grow Plants
There’s nothing like a breath of fresh air. Bring the fresh air inside by growing plants! Plants create a clean, healthy environment that is full of life. Plants also help purify the air, which is beneficial to your lung health.
8. Style a Soft Rug
There’s nothing worse than stepping onto a cold floor first thing in the morning. Not only are rugs stylish, but they also keep your feet warm! Woven, faux fur, and shag rugs are plush and toasty.
9. Choose Peaceful Art
Beautiful landscapes, family photos, and handmade art are a perfect way to decorate your walls. Paintings of raging storms and photographs of historical events may be a good way to impress your art critic friends, but a bad way to keep your bedroom care-free and stressless.
10. Keep Technology Out
Having a TV in your room creates unnecessary temptation. Instead of going to bed, you’ll want to watch just one more episode. Keep your laptop in the living room. Avoid playing loud music before bed. Invest in an alarm clock, so you aren’t tempted to stay on your phone after setting your alarm. Blue light emitted from screens trick our brains into thinking that it’s daytime, making it harder to relax or fall asleep. By keeping technology out of your cozy bedroom, you’ll create a more simple and less distracting environment.
11. Beware of Messes
Not only do piles of laundry, overflowing shelves, and cramped desks look bad, but they can also give you unnecessary stress. Make a habit of straightening up for just 5-10 minutes a day. It’s easier to maintain a clean room if you take just a few minutes every day to tidy up, rather than waiting until the end of the week to clean everything all at once.
12. Keep your Bedroom and Office Separate
Whatever happens, do not do work or homework in your bed! Those who make a habit of working in bed have a hard time falling asleep at night because their minds are conditioned to expect work. Having files and deadlines piled in your room can cause stress and anxiety. Keep work out of your bedroom!
13. Use a Diffuser
Many natural oils have calming benefits. Lavender is proven to reduce stress and relax our minds. Chamomile can make people feel sleepy. Vanilla has anti-anxiety benefits. Diffusing these oils can create a relaxing mood and prevent dry air.
We hope you’ve learned a thing or two about making your bedroom the coziest it can be! What trick will you use first?
